The Crooked Hour
The Crooked Hour begins sometime after midnight, when the respectable people have gone home and everyone left in the room has a story. Ginhouse Parade’s debut album wanders through dirty New Orleans bars, immigrant ships, back-room gambling tables, cheap hotels, funeral parlors and places three floors above businesses that ask no questions. Its characters include men who sell tomorrow for another drink, women remembered after a single meeting, gangsters nobody admits to killing, undertakers with one very well-traveled suit, and immigrants who arrive in America with names the payroll clerk refuses to spell. Musically, The Crooked Hour twists circus swing, dark cabaret, gypsy punk, ragtime and noir jazz into something deliberately unstable. Violins fight accordions, brass crashes through crooked piano, funeral marches turn into drinking songs, and every so often an 808 kick arrives about eighty years too early. These are songs about people who rarely make the history books. Mostly because the history books close before the bars do.
